Happy First Day

Dear Parents of our Wonderful First Graders,

We had a terrific and fun-filled day today!  Mrs. Morissey and I agree that we have a fantastic group of first graders this year.   They are fun to get to know and I can tell that they will make some good friends this year.

Tuesdays, our class has two specialists in a row.   We have music and PE.  I bet your child will have lots to tell you about both of those activities as well as the new playground at our school.

It looks like the weather this week is going to be warm, so please send a water bottle to school with your child that way they can have water at their desks.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, is an early release day (like all Wednesdays).   School dismisses at 2pm.

Welcome to 1st Grade!

Welcome new first graders and parents! Mrs. Morissey and I are getting the classroom ready for all of our new first graders.We are so excited to have each of you in our class this year. I know this will be a terrific year. You can read a little about each of us by clicking on the tab about us at the top of this page.

This blog will be a place for parents to come and see what is happening in our room. Students will get a chance to write blog posts about topics they are studying and they will get to share some of their 1st grade work right here.

We will update the blog with new posts (you can read them right in this spot), at least once a month - generally around the 1st of the month.   If we have something we need to let you know about mid-month, we will send you a reminder that the blog has been updated.

Mrs. Morissey and I have had the most wonderful time with you and your children this year as they grew as readers, writers, mathematicians, and artists.   We feel so lucky to have been able to teach them this year.

Happy Father’s Day!!

We read "Elmer" and drew patterned elephants today.

Lastly....Mrs. Morissey and I want to say THANK YOU so much for the delightful end of year cards and gifts we received.   We both feel ready for our beach trip now....with our cup, blanket, bag, and gift cards.   How spoiled are we??   I can't wait to buy some great books, drink some coffee and treat myself to some ice-cream.  All compliments of an amazing class.

My daughter is enjoying the treats too!

Things to Know about our Last 7 days of 1st Grade



Father's Day Scratch Art Cards.... wait til you see what's inside.  Dad's Celebration is next Monday.


Hi Parents, our year in 1st grade is winding down.   Your first graders continue to work hard as they get ready for 2nd grade.  Mrs. Morissey and I want to thank you for being such a wonderful group of parents and having such terrific kids.

This Friday is our first grade party.  Thank you to Theresa Harrington for helping to organize this and to all you parents who are coming to help.  It should be a lot of fun.  

Here are the details:

Date:  June 17th, 2011

Time:  1 to 2:30 pm

The schedule will be as follows:
12:00 – 1:00        Volunteers sign in and meet at the gym.  Get equipment and go to set up the field.
1:00 – 2:00           Kids meet the parents at the grass field and divide into groups, and do 10 minute rotations at each station.  Snack table will be centrally located and kid can come and go as they need to.
2:00 – 2:15           Kids go to recess – volunteers clean up snacks. (leave stations – 3rd grade will clean them up after their party).
2:15                        Kids meet at the benches for popsicles.
2:30                        Return to class.

Station Information:

The teachers will have already numbered all of the children in their class with numbers 1 through 6 - which stands for each of the six stations/activities that the children will be participating in during the duration of the party.  At the beginning of the party, when the children meet us at the grass field, you will direct them to whichever station matches the number they were assigned by their teacher.  The plan is to have 2 to 3 volunteer parents per station to help facilitate the activity as well as manage the children when it's time to transition on to the next station.   Mr. Sandbo has been very generous, and will be allowing us to borrow some of his games/equipment for our stations.  The stations will be as follows:

1.       Parachute Play

2.       Frisbee Golf (throwing Frisbees through a hula hoop)
3.       Bubbles
4.       Sack Races
5.       Poster Making (Welcome First Graders) - this will be our 1st Grader's send off and welcome to next year's incoming 1st Grade class. 
6.       Oglo Ball 

Snacks:  

The snacks for the party will be watermelon, bananas, and all-natural juice popsicle bars as well as water.  The fruit and popsicles are being supplied through the party fund money that was donated earlier in the year!  

Next Monday is our Dad's Celebration.   We will be sharing some of our work and celebrating all our terrific dads from 9-9:45 that morning.  We hope to see you all there.

 Lastly, a librarian from the King County Library will be visiting us on Tuesday to talk about their summer reading program.  This  is a great way to keep up all the reading skills your child has mastered this year.

Remember that the last two days of school are both 1/2 days.   Next Monday is our last full day. 

Monday Update

Today we learned about a Pop Artist named Claes Oldenburg and how he uses humor in his artwork.   Oldenburg has lots of sculptures of sandwiches and burgers.    In preparation for Father's Day, we made some giant sandwiches filled with things our dads might like to eat.

We hope all our dads  can make our

Dad's Celebration on Monday, June 20th from 9-9:45. 

We will be presenting some special "all about my daddy" books and sending home the last of our first grade artwork.

If the dad in your family can't make it, please feel free to send in another special adult.

We began a new math unit today.... Topic 17:  Subtraction Facts to 18
